Se7en (1995)- Hard to Forget, Difficult to Categorize

Se7en is a well-known dark thriller directed by David Fincher in 1995. Could we qualify it as a classic or a cult movie? Although it has many right ingredients, this movie is really hard to be categorized. David Fincher showed us his own vision for the movie: rich cinematography, high production value, talented and established A-list actors and of course – memorable score. Even though he played in numerous movies, Se7en is considered to be one of the best Morgan Freeman movies. Together with acting genius Morgan Freemen, stars acting in this masterpiece are Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey.

What is the plot? Two detectives, Sommerset (starring Morgan Freemen) and Mills (Brad Pitt) are trying to run a serial killer to ground – serial killer who based his evil deeds on the seven deadly sins. This dark thriller drives you all the way from the beginning saving the most shocking revelations for the end, for the very last scenes. Se7en is certainly not just another movie comfortable to watch. It is psychological trip to the hell and back leaving your heart pumping and head spinning. Sensory assaulting beginning and extremely shocking final scenes are what makes this movie really hard to forget – in both good and a bad way. As the two detectives get closer to the serial killer, Se7en shifts from thriller to horror and personal drama. When you watch it, the story shakes you, both emotionally and mentally, surround you with fear and anticipation and there is nothing you could do to avoid this.

Even though violence is considered to be the key theme found in Seven, this movie also depicts hopelessness, desperation and apathy. That makes Se7en darker and less comfortable to watch, yet the one of the movies you should see – at least once, but well prepared.
