Love & Friendship (2016) – Review
If you’re really into period dramas, you’ve probably already watched “Love & Friendship” based on Jane Austen’s novella “Lady Susan”, written and directed by Whit Stillman. Although the romance is literally drained out of this movie (and novella likewise), and the pragmatism is brutally exposed, everybody working on this project has done their best to deliver funny and engaging result. Starring Kate Beckinsale, Xavier Samuel and Chloe Sevigny, “Love & Friendship” has nothing to do with neither love nor friendship, but it’s a 2016 movie you simply shouldn’t miss!
Bewitching, young and clever widow Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) pays a visit to the estate of her in-laws running away from “rumors” about her flirting and dalliances. She intends to secure husbands and future for both her and her daughter Frederica (Morfydd Clark) using both beauty and brains. She simultaneously attracts many men from high society, including married, yet gorgeous Lord Manwaring (Lochlann O’Mearain), handsome and young Reginald DeCourcy (Xavier Samuel) and silly, yet extraordinary rich Sir James Martin (Tom Bennet). With the little help from her American friend Alicia Johnson (Chloe Sevigny), Lady Susan Vernon somehow manages to get the best of this severely complicated situation.
“Love and Friendship” is a hilarious period comedy, but directed in such a manner that even 21st-century viewers can find it modern and contemporary. Whit Stillman definitely did a great job bringing this early Jane Austen’s novella to the screen. The truth is, this movie is something that both fans and haters of Jane Austen’s work can enjoy; the main character is incredibly selfish, manipulating and scheming, which isn’t something you’d expect to find there. My only problem with this movie is its title, because I think it doesn’t really match the plot. Aside from that, everything is amazing!
